Who gets to decide (at a private level, no less!) if the border is an arbitrary imposition? It seems to me that the Gov'ts on both sides recognize that border as currently drawn.

As I say repeatedly- I am not a political animal, and my knowledge of history is also poor. (I can sing opera for you,if you like, with much more authority.)

But aren't all borders arbitrary, being set and controlled by the people who have the most power at any given time? There is nothing new about this.

The problem seems to me not to be about land and borders, or the freedom to cross, though, but about citizens of Mexico wanting to escape the poverty of their country to live the American life. This is a problem when the large numbers of aliens begin to be a serious drain on the system--claiming health care, food stamps, ADC benefits, and education.

So I'm not sure what the logical solution is. Do you think then that the borders should be completely open? ANd then what do we do with the influx of people? Is this really practical for America?
I guess I don't understand what you are saying. I didn't mean to offend you and if I sounded like an Ugly American, I beg your pardon.
