That is true, although at the time the Netherlands belonged to the Spanish and the northern provinces were just beginning to rebel. Perhaps I should have said "Netherlandish", a term sometimes used in museums. In any case, I was not assessing blame, just commenting on my distaste. As for Vermeer, your comments are, how shall I say, odd......

Vermeer's daughters were NOT ugly. They were beautiful. The Girl in the Red Hat is in the permanent collection of the National Gallery, so I can see it whenever I want to, and it is very fine. She reminds me of the girl that was in Pretty in Pink, the actress, can't remember her name. Molly Ringwald.
