access to the CPU through a high speed connection
It was my understanding after that discussion I had, that 1394 was planned to be included into the memory controller chipsets. Then it was determined that if there were a large number of 1394 peripherals available, they wouldn't need a PC for many functions. It was then that 1394 plans were dropped. This raises cost of 1394 and leaves it to run on the PCI bus where it operates slower than it could. Then came the desperate search for a kludge that could handle some peripherals without making 1394 too popular. The last thing Intel or Microsoft wanted was the TV talking to a disk drive or tape with no PC in between.
