gdichaz Re: 1x rollout of handsets

I'm hearing that operators who are deploying 1x systems will demand 1x phones even prior to full infrastructure implementation to "seed" the market with phones that allow them to double capacity when they throw the switch. The handsets will work on IS-95A/B systems until infra is in place. The only drawback is if any interoperability issues come up on the 1x side after the phones are out.

Chaz,

<< Since the capacity of voice is doubled with 1xMC, why would anyone one (even Verizon) wait? ... Seems pretty simple that the sooner, the better ... and the phones follow to make that possible ... Why do you see delay? >>

Because to the best of my knowledge, although test calls have been made for 1xMC, no trials have begun (in NA), and no conracts for infra upgrades or handsets have been let. These events and the integration testing associated with same are somewhat traditional in this business, are they not?

There is some lead time associated with each step.
