Qualcomm, 8 Chinese Cos Sign Deals For
CDMA Equip -Report

Dow Jones Newswires

BEIJING -- Qualcomm Corp. (QCOM), the U.S.-based wireless
technology giant, has signed licensing deals with eight top Chinese
manufacturers to develop equipment using the CDMA standard it
pioneered, state-run China Daily reported Thursday.

No financial details of the deals were disclosed.

Under the terms of the deal, the Chinese companies will develop handsets
and wireless base stations that use both current generation and third
generation, or 3G, CDMA technology, the newspaper said.

The deals come less than a week after China's second biggest
telecommunications company, China United Telecommunications Corp., or
China Unicom, said it had shelved plans for a current-generation CDMA
network, but would eventually use 3G CDMA.

A Qualcomm official confirmed that deals had been signed, but declined to
provide details, saying a company statement might be released later.
