I believe the announcement will give QCOM the stock a short-term boost. But it again seems like one of those wacky plans out of the "let's build our own Japanese network" book. QCOM, stripped of a money-losing carrier biz, infra biz, and handset biz, was supposed to be a lean, clean royalty-machine...then they make a gambit to get back into the carrier biz when DDI snubs them, and now they are going to teach 9 Chinese companies how to build handsets and base stations from scratch? MC equipment that will be sold to??? I just don't see a lot of money at the end of this latest gambit. Lots of hype, though.
Perhaps this is a prelude to a new buildout announcement from Unicom?

molloy - your info is very outdated.

Q had its problems supporting ASIC/Software customers years ago, but they have dramatically refocused the company and improved this side of the business a great deal.
