Can Intel make a cultural shift which might be needed in order for it to succeed in the future?

From many sources of information over the years, I have been convinced that Intel has had a very confrontational culture. Wish I could pin down an example and a link, I can't. Recently there was an interview with Andy Grove where he talked about trying to export Intel values and the details of Intel's employee programs to the new companies, and Intel found very quickly that it didn't work. So they are letting the new companies function the way they have always have (I don't have a link to this interview).

So, now you have a company that has many more diverse divisions, and by necessity the top management cannot micro-manage the Intel architecture group. They allow the new companies to operate under their own cultures, but they cling to the culture that got them there within the Intel architecture group, leaving a void in the quality of the decision making process? A several year old, top down decision to use Rambus memory never gets challenged by the troops, and top management is no longer reviewing or micro-managing the decision?

All pure (and probably worthless) speculation. But Intel's decision making process allowed them to "paint themselves into a corner" in regards to Rambus. I hope they spend the time to audit the process that led them to the current situation, and make changes to avoid similar problems in the future.
