Canon just came out with a digital EOS (3 megapixels?). The problem is it's $3500. Prices will be dropping soon. In a few years, digital SLR's be mainstream.

You might want to try a 2 megapixel camera now. They're about $500 and you could just use it as a point and shoot that you can just carry in your pocket. Save your SLR for the "bigger events." You'll become addicted to digital photography.
