David, what people generally don't consider (at least not yet) is that a falling dollar at first drives the value of the growing trade imbalance higher, as well as giving a boost to incipient inflationary pressures, as the rise in import prices gives companies an opportunity to begin passing their rising input costs on to consumers.

i have just read an article in an Austrian newspaper that follows the cumulative effect of rising gasoline prices and the weak Euro throughout the economy. quite illuminating as it were...
