Compaq sees rising revenue from Asia

SINGAPORE, June 7 (Reuters) - Personal computer giant Compaq Computer Corp said on Wednesday it had launched a new handheld wireless device which it hopes will boost its Asian telecommunications revenue to 15 percent from 12 percent in 1999.

Larry Schwartz, vice president and general manager of Compaq Telecommunications, said the company's telecommunications arm, formed last year, logged a revenue of about $4 billion in 1999.

Schwartz told a news conference Compaq's mobile Internet device would allow users to trade stocks or make purchases on the Internet.

He said he saw Asia, which lags in Internet usage via desktops and fixed telecom lines, leapfrogging North America and Europe by due to the use of wireless devices.

The company was already working out trials with banks in the United States and business enterprises in Latin America to introduce the application to consumers, Schwartz said.

I posted earlier on handheld devices introduced Compaq, Casio, H-P, etc. using MSFT Pocket PC. The iPaq model from Compaq is displayed at Compaq web site.

If VLNC could qualify their batteries for these devices, the market will be huge.
