Mike,

Could it be that the Metaframe for Solaris product is a result of the APM acquisition, and the Vertigo product is building from the Viewsoft acquisition ?

Mike,

There is so little information about Vertigo that most everything is speculation. However, I don't mind doing some speculation if you don't! ;-)

For what it is worth, I believe Vertigo is going to be a Java-based ICA client designed to work on the J2ME platform. Considering that this version of Java still has some serious issues to address, I wouldn't expect to see anything real coming out of this effort for at least one more year.

What would one do with this type of technology? Well, Citrix on J2ME would allow small form factor devices to benefit from the thin-client architecture that Citrix has. The pro / cons / implications of Citrix's approach has already been widely discussed in the past so I won't rehash this.

Why would Citrix bother with this effort? Because they need to cover all bases. There are a lot of different outlets where Citrix's technology can be used. The million dollar question is: Which emerging technology is going to win? Since that is a very difficult question to answer, Citrix's management team seems to be casting a wide net and seeing which efforts gain traction.
