That must have been a major display. Some of the problem also has to do with the angle of viewing. So many factors go into seeing great northern lights that it's possible for you to have a great view and we see nothing.

One of the benefits of working in Prudhoe Bay in the winter was the spectacular northern lights displays. Being so far north they occurred directly overhead. The really active displays consisted of orange and red hues.
