In a general sense, yes, although the specific example I just contrived. It is useful to remember that honesty is not only good, but the best policy, to stay out of harm's way...........

That's especially true if they have children. Truthfully, I think it is "instinctual" for people lie. It's a means of self preservation. Everyone lies. BUT, I think that most people have an internal code of conduct that prevents them from engaging in the worst kind of human behavior that "necessitates" the lie. The most corrupt have to be the most prolific liars out of necessity.
