Conexant and Philsar Join Forces to Develop Industry's Most Comprehensive Family of Bluetooth Solutions

MONTE CARLO, Monaco--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2000
Monday June 12, 6:08 am Eastern Time
Company Press Release

Conexant Will Deliver Industry's Lowest-Cost, Lowest-Power
Bluetooth Product Offering -- From Radio Frequency (RF) ICs To Single-Chip System Solutions

Conexant Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT - news), and recently-acquired Philsar Semiconductor Inc., a leading provider of RF components for personal wireless connectivity, will announce details of a family of next-generation Bluetooth(TM) system solutions at this week's Bluetooth Congress 2000 conference in Monte Carlo. Designed for wireless devices such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile computers, the combined solutions will be targeted for applications that need short-range mobile data access along with robust performance and low power consumption.

Commencing in the fourth calendar quarter of this year, Conexant will deliver the first product of what will be a wide array of Bluetooth solutions to meet specific market segment requirements for performance, cost and integration. Based on Philsar's RF leadership and Conexant's broad communications portfolio and systems design expertise, the Bluetooth offering will include a family of radio components, a variety of single- and two-chip system solutions and a complete software protocol stack including application profiles. The combined solutions will offer manufacturers a consistent development environment, low bill-of-materials and manufacturing costs, and provide the autonomy, ease-of-use and affordability which consumers need in personal wireless connectivity applications.

``Bluetooth technology is poised to become a key standard for personal area networks of the future, and we plan to take a unique approach to the Bluetooth market,'' said Moiz Beguwala, senior vice president and general manager, Conexant Systems Inc. Wireless Communications Division. ``In addition to providing Bluetooth components, we will deliver full system solutions integrated with other communications products using Conexant devices. Conexant's synergistic portfolio of communications solutions will bring wireless capability to a variety of products, and enable such applications as transmitting digital photos directly to your mobile PC using a Bluetooth-equipped camera or downloading email from your cell phone to your laptop on the go.''

Conexant's broad communications product offering encompasses wireless, Internet access, home networking, imaging, set-top appliance and related technologies. Each of these technologies is expected to play a key role in enabling next-generation, short-range wireless networks of digital communications appliances, also known as personal area networks. Conexant plans to incorporate Bluetooth technology into products from multiple divisions, and develop Bluetooth-enabled semiconductors for a variety of communications products including cable modems, home networking products, digital imaging devices and advanced mobile terminals supporting voice and data services.

Combined with Philsar's world-class Bluetooth portfolio, Conexant's expertise in wireless systems design, and its diverse process portfolio uniquely position the company to be a leading supplier of Bluetooth component and system solutions. Conexant's established relationships with key mobile phone, PC and communication equipment manufacturers also provide a strong foundation for its entry into the Bluetooth market.

``This family of product offerings will demonstrate the value of Conexant's acquisition of Philsar and the combined capability to develop truly market-ready Bluetooth component and system solutions,'' said Mike O'Neill, executive director of marketing, RF components and subsystems of Conexant's Wireless Communications Division. ``Our planned offerings will address customers' requirements for complete Bluetooth system solutions which offer ultra-low power consumption, robust performance and reduced costs.''

About Bluetooth
