Alcatel, Tyco Submarine Get Pacts For $600 Million Cable Systems

Dow Jones Online News, 06/7/2000 13:28

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- France Telecom (FTE) said Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. and Alcatel SA's (ALA) Alcatel Submarine Systems unit received contracts for a $600 million SAT-3/WASC/SAFE submarine cable system project.

MCI WorldCom Inc. (WCOM), one of the investors in the project, said last year that the cable system is scheduled for commercial use in December 2001.

In a press release Wednesday, France Telecom, which is also an investor in the project, said the system will connect Malaysia to Portugal and Spain routed through India, Mauritius, Reunion, South Africa, Angola, Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal and the Canary Islands.

SAT-3/WASC/SAFE was created in January 1998 from the combination of two earlier submarine cable project initiatives, SAFE (South Africa-Far East) and SAT-3/WASC (South Africa Telecommunications-West Africa Submarine Cable).
