Ranger Oil Asked by Exchange to Comment on Share Rise (Correct)

Calgary, Alberta, June 8 (Bloomberg) -- Ranger Oil Ltd. has been asked by the Toronto Stock Exchange to say whether it knows why its shares have risen today in heavier-than-normal trading.

Ranger shares rose C$0.45 (C$0.30) to C$8. More than 4.5 million Ranger shares changed hands, seven times the three-month daily average of about 820,000.

``The volume is large,'' said Neil Winchester, head of surveillance for the Toronto exchange. ``We're aware of it'' and ``have been in touch with the company.''

Petrobank Energy & Resources Ltd. has made a hostile C$1.6 billion takeover bid for Ranger.

Ranger President Fred Dyment declined to comment. He said earlier this week the company was expecting another bid by tomorrow.
