My best friend,Best man at my wedding,College roommate worked in japan for Mitsubishi Chemicals for 7 years 1992-1999 and was a high ranked employee which is very odd him being an Italian American.Today he runs their office in NYC and he will disagree with you on your notion. He still lived in a cubicle granted it was a posch cubicle and his perks where mostly covered by the company(golf, fine eating entertainment). He will tell you had the company not covered his perks or he could not afford them.

As far as europe is concerned,I have lived all over europe since I was a child(England,Austria,Switzerland) and currently married to a wonderful girl from Norway.Europe is a socialist set up where they tax you to death and big government rules.Income levels in the US are by far higher than Europe when cost of living is taken into account.

Joel - "social benefits" is an oxymoron. You are right - it is all relative - and Sham is also right - you are relatively better off in the good ole US of A.
