WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) --Billionaire investor Warren Buffet has taken a 5.1 percent stake in PMC Capital Inc.

The Dallas, Tex.-based closed-end investment company originates loans to small businesses, according to regulatory papers filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

Buffet disclosed beneficial ownership of 598,100 shares on April 6, according to the Schedule 13G filing.

PMC Capital (PMC: news, msgs) operates as a business development company and has three subsidiaries that make small business loans primarily in the lodging industry. It also targets medical, food service, retail, and the commercial real estate industries.

PMC Capital reported on Monday a 1999 profit of $13.4 million, or $1.11 per share, versus income of $13.9 million, or $1.16 per share, the prior year. The company attributed the slight earnings drop to the decreased volume in the securitization market.

Shares of PMC Capital closed up 5/8 to 8 1/2.
