Dear Tench:

Each RMBS chip is a link on a serial chain. It goes from the controller to the first chip, from the first chip to the second, and so on. The last chip is connected to the terminator of the chain (this is also on the motherboard and is why all empty slots need a continuity connector). Thus the number of sets is equal to the number of chips plus one. The number of sets on the motherboard is the number of slots plus one to the terminator. You should now see the problems with long serially connected chains for routing and other stuff in the "details". See my other post for the real reason RMBS has troubles.
