ZO, the answer is that you are corret, but who cares? Cisco will hit its growth targets not by beating LU and NT in the optical market. They have so many other opportunities that they can meet their numbers with those markets alone. Of cources, optical is one space they need to compete effectively in. But wouldn't you say that going from $0 to a $1 billion run rate in less than a year is pretty damn good?

Ya know.. you're right. I don't know why Cisco bothers... Heck the deals on Cerent, Monterrey, and Pirelli closed about 6-8 months ago and then Cisco doesn't bother to announce any wins at Supercom. I mean really..... 6-8 months... They should throw in the towel. I mean we want instant gratification here. Right!!! It's preposterous that Cisco should attempt to build a business here (albeit they're generating over a $1B annually from these businesses) ... they should just give up. After all $1B run rate in 6-8 months of effort... this sounds like a failing business to me.

Hey ZO.. who's doing the spin??? I just think you're expecting too much too soon (although I know a lot of exec's that would love to have a start-up ramp to $1B in a year). Seems pretty successfuly to me - announcements are not. And I can guarantee you that that Billion ain't all com'n from Cogent. I think you should be careful what you wish for.

BTW and fwiw: It's well documented by those that know that an event like Supercom is the absolute WORST place to announce a contract. It simply get's lost in all the other "noise" or news. If you want to get play on a deal you announce after the show or during a quiet period where there is little other news. But then... you clearly don't understand that.

Cisco doesn't seem to announce contract wins.

What they do seem to do is:

Enter a market.
Learn from customers.
Buy leaders in the fast growing market.
Grow Market share.
Develop great Customer Service.
Grow revenues.
Parnership well.
Meet there financial estimates.
Retain employee's.
Employee leading edge technology to help their business.

We'll see if they can continue to do it. I think they will. I don't think an announcment (or not) from Cisco at Supercomm or whatever makes a hill of beans. I KNOW that they have made some contract wins to the biggest telecom SP names around, but since Cisco hasn't announced it, neither am I. I like my job.

One question: If Cisco can go from 0 to 1 Billion in 6 months in Optical, how much do you think they can do in 18 months? 24 months? Smile. :)

And does it amaze anyone ELSE that they can grow high end router business faster than the nimble start up? Amazing.

Great Company. of course all this doesn't mean bambs isn't right about the stock price. But I'd wager that if we get to half, it's through another split. :)
