Frank and Thread, I can only offer some impressions on AVNX's claim of FTT-Desk. Their powermux and the new dwdm interleavers of others could provide a very interesting allocate bandwidth in the building (or I guess neighborhood or residential applications). It seems like a more robust way to share a sinle fiber than say Quantum Bridge's PON scheme. If it works as claimed and can be rapidly produced (I am still trying to understand what AVNX's acquisition of Holographics does to speed production and cut cost)it still faces the network infrastructure problems that you mentioned. I would guess roll out would be slow as the technology is tested. That said, if I were one of the BLECs with fiber in the basement of my CBD offices I would certainly look into the technology. I think that MFNX, Yipes and other owners of Metro glass loops might find it interesting. And what if a Bell South or SBC's Pronto uses their fiber deep into the neighborhood as a basis for lighting up HFC where it exists instead of DSLAMming residents. In terms of resizing the processor, it was my impression that the many colors of separate signals would create a surplus of channels to be distributed to end users. Each would be protocal neutral. The trick would be to build a routing or switching network that would set up an "optical circuit" from the end-user (which could be a single tenant's LAN and not a desk top) through a compatible metro loop onto a likewise compatable backbone and demuxed to the end users. The networks (LAN, Metro, BBone) are still far from being being all optical but the pieces are falling into place. I don't thing that the O-e-O conversions required in most Metro loops will be that bad for performance. With a potential abundance of lightpaths the number of channels will be more important than the speed at which they can be set up or torn down. Even if the edge remains electronic, with gig ether and faster technologies being deployed, I think that layer 2-3 and layer 4-7 switches could create an interesting feed into a backbone router and onto a dwdm light path.
