I have PM-ed you on India etc. I didn't intend to suggest you are racist. Just the China, Asian-bashing on this and other threads using tired old stereotypes.

Maurice:

About India, the right question to ask is: Why is the cellular penetration (CDMA,GSM,TDMA, analog) so low in India compared to China? I simply cannot understand how such a large number of Chinese can afford cell phones.

India's cellular use is primarily urban. But 20 cents a minute prices for cell phone use in India are not really that attractive. Hey, even in the US, it is the 10 cents a minute pricing that has accelerated subscriber numbers.

Indian cities now have a manned phone booth every 100 yards (about). The per minute cost at these phone booths is one fifth of a cell phone minute cost. So for outgoing calls it is not really important to carry a cell phone.

As to why Indians do not have CDMA vs GSM. Maybe Qualcomm does not think it strategic to focus on a relatively small cellular market in India compared to China. They have to win their battles in the bigger markets first. Remember that CDMA is still in minority in Japan and China too. Japan is certainly not voting to stay poor!

India's lack of CDMA certainly has nothing to do with voting to be poor. There is a grain of truth in the statement about Indians voting to stay poor. That is a seperate discussion best carried on Maurice's Qualcomm thread.

And Ajay. Cool Down. You have obviously not read enough of Maurice's postings to appreciate the thought provoking ideas he throws up. And, he has a much better understanding of India than most non-indians.

Can we carry on the "India voting to stay poor" discussion on Maurice's Qualcomm thread?

Arun
