You missed your calling -- the solar folks would love to see your 40% efficient photovoltaics. I think the record is 32% at NREL--in the visible; usual production variety is around 20%

LOL. No, I didn't miss anything.

Curtis, this is basic stuff. The efficiencies you refer to are referenced to the solar energy spectrum reaching the ground.

For maximum efficiency, the absorber layer's bandgap needs to be near the incident radiation energy. Anything much less and a lot of the incident energy is lost to heat. When I used the term "solar", I meant the structure typically used for solar cells, yet tuned to a single wavelength. I've seen efficiencies > 50%, but none of these devices are commercially available.
