Tom, you obviously have experience dealing with the Asian business community (I did a teeny-weeny bit but only enough to know I don't know squat), so your statement: "My take on all this is that China has outfoxed Qualcom on this one" interests me. I don't see why the Q was outfoxed, please expound.
The only plausible chess game that a lurker on this thread pointed out to me via PM went something like this: let's assume you are a Honk Kong based billionaire with extensive holdings in telecommunications (among other things). And let's say you wanted to add a few bill to the pot by buying the Q low and selling it high. First, you'd have to get it low which you do by suggesting to your buddies at China Unacom that they launch FUD missles. Then you buy the crap out of it from 80 to 60, and when you've taken your position, you tell your friends to issue clarifying statements so the FUD goes away, and they can do what they were always going to do which was use CDMA.
Anyway, except for everybody who sold Q on the way down or otherwise got hit in the decline, I don't see that this was anything more than normal game playing and certainly don't see why it implies Q got jimmied. The Q's stock is 'in play' as a hot currency so good poker players everywhere are jumping on. For those who read sheeps' intestines (sorry Maurice) and other arcane short term trading crystal balls and think they can play back, I'd say it's a free world, jump in. But it ain't the Q's fault. SM
