<the Autism Center will be established at the university's Center on Human Development and Disability and will be a place where parents of autistic children can learn, health officials can be trained and the newest research can be put to use. >

I suppose it may be happening to some extent, but it seems to me the researchers should be learning from the parents...

< "Unfortunately most health professionals do not recognize autism until the child is 4 years of age when the optimal time for treatment has passed."

<Commonly characterized by a child's failure to make eye contact, autism can be diagnosed as early as 12 months.>

We were told by the University of Illinois autism 'specialists' that they never diagnosed until age 3... luckily we didn't listen to them. It's also possible to go through pediatricians like mad as they blithely tell you there is nothing to worry about... especially in less severe cases... PDD, etc.

<The last decade has seen an increase in the number of children with autism, an illness thought to have genetic roots but which may also be affected by environmental conditions, Dawson said.>

I'll never understand why they aren't studying this instead [as well as?] the disease... ie. if cases are increasing, some say exploding especially if you include PDD and ADD, then let's find out why for heavens sake.

<UW receives $10 million to study autism >

Awufully good news...
