This is very odd and unexpected. Anyone have a possible explanation?

Canada rotary rig count up 41, U.S. down 26
NEW YORK, June 9 (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in Canada rose by 41 to 311 during the week ending June 9, according to oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc (NYSE:BHI - news).

In the United States, the number of rigs searching for oil and gas fell by 26 to 840, meanwhile, in the Gulf of Mexico, the rig count fell by two to 128.

The number of U.S. rigs exploring on land fell 18 at 693, while the number of rigs operating offshore fell by two at 133. The number of rigs in inland water fell by six at 14.

The number of U.S. rigs searching for oil rose by one at 197 and the number of rigs searching for gas fell by 25 to 643.

There were no miscellaneous rigs, down two from last week.

There were 202 U.S. rigs exploring directionally, down 10, 44 exploring horizontally, down four, and 594 exploring vertically, down 12.

The states with the largest change in their rig count were Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana falling nine each at 314, 65 and 178 respectively.

The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas.
