Harmony scraps middlemen
Business Day, 6 Jun 2000, p 1
South Africa's third-largest gold producer, Harmony Gold Mining, is taking steps to sell its gold directly to consumers. CEO Bernard Swanepoel says the company will cut out middlemen such as bullion dealers, who, claims Swanepoel, have done very little to promote gold. Harmony has already been selling much of its bullion to consumers in India, and has also sold its gold online through a link to its website. Harmony sells its own brand of 10 tola bars of 99.9% gold, which carry an elephant motif. It is the only gold mining company in South Africa that refines its own gold production to manufacture branded gold bars.
