I consider that to be a tremendous technical acomplishment for the time.

This is a myth. When somebody sits down and tinkers with something first, they have no more talent than those who tinker with it last. I imagine that the first electricians considered themselves brain surgeons. When a technology is wide-spread its true nature is well-known and those working with are considered skilled labor, nothing more. I'm afraid that developing YET-ANOTHER-BASIC interpreter wasn't really much of an achievement. As for a "young age", I suggest you read the Soul of a New Machine to see what truly talented and smart "kids" were doing versus the johnny-come-lately BASIC geek-wannabees. A lot of people are easily impressed so don't feel bad.
