It's simple. MSFT is entering SUNW's market space. MSFT is recognized as a formidable competitor. The SUNW folks are rightly afraid that they will lose market share to MSFT. Once MSFT sets their sights on a particular market segment, they doggedly pursue it until they are successful at dominating that segment. They might not be successful on the first or second attempt, but ultimately they dominate. The SUNW folks are simply trying to kill the competition while they still can. Processors of every type are getting to be so fast that fastest and best hardware will be a secondary consideration. The real competition will be from companies like Transmeta. Whatever system suits your needs will be emulated to run on whatever hardware platform has the best price/performance ratio.
