Well, you have said much of what I was going to say...

A new thing, yes; but not just cliche new. Nouveau sort of; and then Sophisticated; and the media of presentation will be indistinguishable background for style and art and journalism.

This is the part that I'm starting to see... that as the "background" becomes more professional, the possibilities for style and expression are growing... and with it, the ability to distinguish been the mediocre, the good and the great...

All media are merging to the web, for projects that want to be there. (I'm not saying they ALL do.) (okay?)

Yes, it's important to distinguish between what can and can't be on the web... but what is exciting (at least to me), is that the borders are dissolving between some areas of art... If an artist (and I'm using this term loosely) wants to present a poem with an accompanying image, or a painting with a certain piece of music, this is possible.... A whole "new media" exists as a forum for expression... and the possibilities are growing all of the time. Some of the most creative advances in mixed media are happening on the net as opposed to in the galleries where cost and space are prohibitive... and also the ability of "visitors" to transport themselves to "the gallery"...

But collaboration and evolutionary ideo-spirals are going to be huge. Independent works will be huge. Effects on people's thinking ~ MONSTROUS. And these can be nice monsters.

Yes, that's what excites me the most.... The interaction... the push-pull that can exist...

Transformation of ideas into presentation at record speed.

And that's the other part that excites... the immediacy... not more waiting months between concept and delivery.... ideas can be communicated while fresh... and if something "changes", that change can be incorporated instead of having to be "included and tolerated" because it's too late and you can't get rid of it....

It will increase their density, yes; their common-ness; but I garntee ya quality and scope and definition are going to explode like never before.

Editors, and compilations, and sources, will become more important.

Basically, on-line magazines.

Yes... or on-line media galleries... "places" to visit and explore....

We should jump in right now.

Yes... I agree.... but then I think you knew that already...

I am worried - the direction of the advancement might not be steered toward increased quality. Digital audio and video are being engineered for increased capacity at the expense of quality. See my long rant preceding.

We've had twenty years, and still no good (better than the technology it's replacing) audio format. I begin to despair.
