I'll second Don's notion concerning taxes and yours that it seems like things are going backwards(at least in many ways). Then I'll add again that the clear result of technology is improvement, and that a two wage earner family today could typically drop to being a one wage earner family and easily, very easily(hehehe), cut back and be like my "poverty" stricken friend, living like kings of old just the same. This is a forest vs trees issue. Short term appearances are, of course, the trees, and they can more closely resemble the long term forest of progress if we bolster freedom by cutting government and hence taxes. There is nothing better I know of that we can do, as a government of the people.

Oh, and to anyone needing help fighting an impending technological tyranny, where do I sign up?
