Re: a hired gun to weed out weak hands...

I started specing Athlon systems for our internal use last winter. One of the reasons was that Carl had me convinced that the 820 and 840 chipsets were losers - primarily because the Rambus interface wasn't robust enough.

I am so glad I paid attention to what he wrote! Otherwise I'd be looking at replacing dozens of systems. We brought in systems based upon the Viper chipset from AMD instead and they have been rock solid. And we haven't had to worry about whether or not we bought unreliable systems (and what we bought was cheaper and faster, as well!).

I understand that most (but not all) of the Rambus problems have been in trying to accommodate non-Rambus memory, but to me that's still an indication that the technology is just too fragile (for me at least).

I believed Carl before, and I'll continue to do so.

OTOH - my broker is a superb technical analyst (who carefully avoids fundamentals) and his response to my order for a few rambus puts was that I should at least wait - because the chart for Rambus looks like it's heading higher near term, not lower. But I'm not a market timer, so I went ahead with the order (it was small).
