It appears that the reason the Taiwan MOBO companies are going to try DDR is because they are not able to make 820 and 840 boards with SDRAM. They probably can not get RDRAM.
They can't get DDR yet. They can only get SDRAM. They are waiting for the 815 chipset in the meantime all they can do is make the older boards or Athlon boards( when they are actually available).

Via's problems with Intel do not help the MOBO makers either.

A lot of power plays going on in the industry.
