Don and Jim, Can't resist butting in here. :-)Libertarianism is far more consistent in principle than 'conservatism' or 'liberalism', IMO I completely agree with that statement.a little bit too doctrinaire and hair-splitting That's the biggest problem confronting the LP and libertarians in general. "My way or the highway" attitudes will ensure that libertarianism remains a splintered minority sideshow to the political big leagues. Political change, (in this country at least), comes through evolution, not revolution. I would love to see the LP become a "big tent" party. There are a lot of people who favor both a free market economy (capitalism) and the preservation of civil liberties (personal freedom in lifestyle choices). Right now there is nowhere for them to go. When the choice is only between the Big Brother, tax and spend controlling nannyism of the Democrats, and the GOP, firmly under the thumb of the morality police of the religious right, where can these people go? Those who are even aware of the LP, (and there aren't many, at that), see a bunch of radical ideologues, bickering amongst themselves, often over issues that most people couldn't care less about. No wonder that a huge number remain disenfranchised and independent. I'd love to see the LP open up and mellow out and become a viable party for those who consider themselves generally as economic conservatives and social liberals (a significant percentage of the population). Changes won't happen overnight but at least it would be heartening to see us moving in the right direction. End of rant. Hell, I'm a foaming radical ideologue myself, <VBG> but I try not to let that blind me to reality. I'd take baby steps towards needed changes to our system over ideological "purity" any day. No more daydreams. If the LP won't come down out of the clouds, we need another party that will. Regards, JB
