<The reason matters not... if the average family has gone from 1 to 2 incomes with kids in daycare, I submit there is a very strong argument that that family is worse off than their parents with 1 income and mom or dad at home regardless of what the 'numbers' say. It's common sense.> The basic necessities of the abundant life have been redefined to include the care and feeding of multiple SUV's, ever larger homes, private schools, au pairs, day care, extra extra curricular sports and the like for the kids they rarely see. The parents (both) are out working in the technology infrastructure, mostly in wheel spinning jobs which do nothing to enhance the corporate or personal bottom line. I would propose a survey to determine whether most gainfully employed individuals in technology could have their jobs performed more efficiently by droids. In "customer service," for example, we will soon be talking to digital agents who will do a better job than homo sap. We are still in the grips of the yuppie-spreadsheet-accelerated-microprocessor work ethic: "I could do your job for you and better if I only had the time..." Not to worry, the house of cards will collapse eventually, and unemployment will force a return to traditional family values. WARNING: POLITICALLY INCORRECT STATEMENT FOLLOWS: Incredibly, if one may also use the anecdotal interpersonal examples here as did Dan vis a vis poverty, the sorriest instances of abundant workplace success are the single, lonely successful females, and the single parent (by choice) career oriented mothers. (not talking about inner city mothers with no choice) The former got what they wanted and are in a state of quiet desperation as the biological clock goes tick toc tick toc, while the latter vow to use spermbanks instead of short-term husbands next time. Yep, its all working great so far, at least so far as the family is concerned...spiritual poverty is the worst kind.
