jdn, these technologies are bleeding edge. it is difficult to know EXACTLY what you will get until it is actually operational - even the best engineers continue to see unexpected results and have to "engineer" solutions.

i see intel's commitment to rambus as the result of the following:

1. intel's intense desire to differentiate itself from amd. amd is a legitimate competitor that will grow as cpus become commodity. intel will only be relatively hurt by the commoditization of this industry.
2. rambus sold intel on the fact their product was the way to differentiate their products.
3. rambus essentially offered MASSIVE financial incentives to intel to stand behind their product.
4. intel did not anticipate the current problems and their impact until they already committed to rmbs and couldn't turn back - in fact, they have a contractual obligation to say nice things about rmbs.

the plan is failing miserably and amd is focused on a plan that works and is executing well and stealing market share points from intel.
