I went through a very hard time when my mother was diagnosed with the same form of cancer that my father had died from years before; at the same time we were trying to adopt a little girl, whose birth mother kept changing her mind. One day, I just fell apart and so called a therapist who had seen one of the boys for something minor a year before, to talk it through. During one of the early sessions, she realized I was the product of a strict Catholic upbringing. She said she should have guessed. She treats a lot of Catholic women; Catholicism causes more problems in the guilt department than even the Jewish mother. With her help I began to unravel the way it had influenced my approach to life, and to myself as a woman. OF course it isn't that simple-- it also had to do with my parents, and the times, and my personality in general, but until then, I don't think I had realized how deeply it had penetrated my core. Catholicism isn't alone in this, and like you, I find zealotry of any color threatening and dangerous. I'm not sure in America, how great the influence of the Church is today, but it has been replaced by the religion of PC and other things that I am quick to question. I don't want my sons to have to go through what I did to "make independent decisions". You were one of those little trouble-making kids!!! I remember you! When I read your words, "Baltimore Catechism", I immediately saw the book---it had a blue cover- with a church spire on it, didn't it? And the first question was- Who is God? And the answer- (my lawsy- this was from 45 years ago!!!!)was"God is the Supreme Being Who made all things and keeps them in existence." Wow- don't make HIM mad! I can't believe you had the nerve to stand up and ask why.Why did God make you? I can still hear the little voices reciting by rote and in unison: "God made us to show forth His goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in Heaven." Whatever they did, they did it so it TOOK.
