Ah, i've heard of it ... never read any Galeano .. he's an argentine, here's a piece of his from a site just down the street from where Tazio is now - mardan.com.ar
[edit] - site maker is an Apple fan, lol - mardan.com.ar

I've never read much in spanish, such education as i have was entirely self-afflicted, quite random, and in english ... one day soon i'll have a library and a net connection installed beside the hammock in the mango tree, and start .. Galeano will be on the list, with Paz, Neruda, Borges, etc.

Excellent intro - "Poor history had stopped breathing" .. it hasn't, of course, we continue to make it ... and that will be true as long as we're both lucky and smart.

Back to the variance in perceptions of the history of the Americas - i don't think the basic facts are in dispute, they are pretty well recognised and documented ... what changes is the angle from which they are viewed, and the relative emphasis given to them ... to an objective observer [should we find such an animal, lol] no group comes off looking particularly brilliant or humane over the long term ... best we can do is try to see other points of view as part of basic education ... walk a mile in the other man's shoes, then you're a mile away, and hey - you've got his shoes -g-

Brief description of his attitude toward the native as compared to that of Montaigne - cwrl.utexas.edu

"We cannot take communion from the altars of a dominant culture that confuses price with value and converts people and countries into merchandise." - nlcnet.org

"When it is genuine, when it is born of the need to speak, no one can stop the human voice, it speaks with hands, the eyes or pores or anything at all." - bloomington.in.us

And he doesn't like the commercialisation of sports, either - sportquest.com ... neither do i .. they are for playing, not for watching, unless you have family and friends playing and you're present in person ... only money would make hockey in June in the temperate northern hemisphere ... i mean look outside, people ... where is the ice? -g-
