SANFORD, Fla. (AP) -- The 19-year-old son of basketball hall-of-famer Julius Irving is "missing and endangered" and the public is being asked to help find him, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office did not immediately say what it meant by saying Cory Marvin Erving is "endangered." In July 1998, Cory Erving and his older brother, Cheo Erving, were charged with possessing a crack pipe and burglarizing a car in nearby Altamonte Springs.

The police statement said Cory Erving was last seen by his family May 28.

"Cory's family has been working with the sheriff's office in the hopes of locating him," department spokesman Steve Olson said in a release. "The search has now been expanded as Cory's information is being distributed to law enforcement across the nation."

He said the family was offering "a substantial award" for the son's return, but did not provide details.

The family and the sheriff scheduled a news conference for late Tuesday morning.

Julius Erving, a basketball Hall of Famer, was named executive vice president of the Orlando Magic in 1997.

As a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player and was a five-time All-NBA First Team selection. Before that he played for the New York Nets in the old American Basketball Association and was named the league's all-time most valuable player.
