Ish, with due respect to compare Ford and GM to Microsoft and its competitors is comparing apples and oranges. Microsoft controls the OS to which all Windows/DOS software must answer. In that sense, Microsoft is not unlike a public utility, such as the telephone or the electric company.

While I am not in favor of breaking up the company, but I am strongly in favor of Microsoft being forced to release the Windows source code in its entirety, and keeping these releases entirely current, to that all potential software developers can play and write on an even field.

control over 80% of their niches
Microsoft is not in trouble for being a monopoly. It is in trouble for using that monopoly power illegaly. There will be a beneficial side effect if any of these other companies were thinking of crossing that line.
