Gersh: Rising gasoline prices are a big wildcard. There is more to it than OPEC. Nothing good has ever come out of rising fuel prices long term in the equity markets.

Gersh: Gas Pipeline Bursts in Michigan; 450 Homes Evacuated, AP Says

Jackson, Michigan, June 8 (Bloomberg) -- An underground pipeline in Michigan burst, spilling as many as 100,000 gallons of gasoline and forcing the evacuation of 450 homes yesterday, the Associated Press reported. Governor John Engler declared a state of emergency after gasoline leaked from a Wolverine Pipeline Co. storage facility about 80 miles west of Detroit to a storm drain that carried it to the Grand River. No injuries were reported, but officials said it could be two or three days before residents of Blackman Township could return home, AP said.

Earlier this month, U.S. regulators proposed a record $3.05 million fine against Olympic Pipeline Co. for safety violations uncovered after its gasoline pipeline in Bellingham, Washington, caused an explosion that killed two boys and a fisherman.
