In some sense, yes. I look at the influence of the Catholic Church in these countries as a problem very much analogous to the influence of that Church in the middle ages, or that of Islam in many developing countries today. Aggressive religion without the moderating influences of education, economic prosperity, and the independent thought which those produce, is a very dangerous thing.
