At the same time, I cannot exclude the idea that the solution will be as improbable to us as the problem was to our grandparents. I see great reason for hope. The idea of global thinking did not exist in 1900 and was an iconoclastic lunacy in 1950. Now it is becoming more and more normal to think in terms of local acts resonating globally - and of giving free resources like air or wetland an intrinsic economic value.
The spoiler, as always, will be politics. At the international level on down to intracorporate squabbles. Greed. I am disgusted every time I see this lumber company's ads proudly proclaim that California's forests are the most protected in thw world. As if that means anything. They're probably counting manmade monocultures of trash pine as "forests".
I am a big believer in the Technical Fix. The day will dawn when we can apply the technical fix to the ancient vampire of politics. Then we'll be cooking with gas, to boink a phrase.
