Pat just curious who the pre-IPO company was that you mentioned. I own some STFZF'soon to be converted into Nanovation. Is it them. I follow their progress on the Raging Bull-interesting and very speculative'but I will be able hopefully to participate in an IPO for the first time.
TIA, keep up the good work. Let the shorts continue to attack if they so desire-long term this is a great company(SDLI) and I(we) am more than willing to hold on during the inevitable pullbacks.

Regards, Trip

MRVC versus CMGI

Pat,

It is true that MRVC is not a competitor of JDSU or GLW or SDLI. It will has a small JDSU in its component business from what it acquired in Taiwan (this component should be profitable, as those companies usually are in Taiwan) plus what it has in house. For the CMGI analogy, it is true that CMGI was never set up to kill Yahoo or Ebay, but that did not prevent it from being successful.

MRVC acquisition of FOCI of Taiwan will get them the business, although we do not know the current revenue run rate. That division currently has revenue, and it is unknown as to whether it is profitable. Foreign companies often first go to Taiwan for management and sometimes technical talents before they start their business in China. I thought one of the reasons why ETEK was an attractive target for JDSU was that they are starting a manufacturing plant in China, where the labor is cheap. ETEK's chairman is probably born in China/Hong Kong/Taiwan so they already had the human capital. A well-trained worker will probably cost $200 to $400 a month (considered a very high salary in China), and an engineer double that. Anything that can be done in a less technically demanding environment (e.g., no need for the super clean room) with minimum intellectual property concern will eventually be done there or in southeast Asia. I thought that their FOCI acquisition is very nice move.

It is indeed frustrating to invest in a company that does not always communicate, perhaps because it is a Israeli company and they play under different rules. They have a very full plate (see the earlier post) and it is interesting to see if it has a plateful of gold or just fake nugget. I suspect that it is something in between.

MRVC has announced in their last conference call that when the integration of component business is completed in quarter two, it will file for IPO (integration is set for this quarter). IPO will occur in the third quarter. Currently, the component business (Luminant) is recruiting a CEO. iTouch division has some profitable assets (not sure if the whole unit is profitable) and a new CEO (a MRVC veteran). It will likely to IPO this year. The timeline is less certain for iTouch, however.

Other MRVC's business is in subsystems (metro target), and affiliated companies are in the metro and long-haul system market. Some of them will succeed because they will be able to get components from MRVC's division, which has been a problem for some of the startup as the article your posted earlier indicated. These affiliated companies are the greatest assets and also the riskiest assets. I have not good idea how to valuate them because these system companies goes for many billion dollars a piece as soon as one of the product is shipping. MRVC's biggest and probably the best looking baby Zaffire will IPO as soon as the product (currently testing) is shipping. Zaffire, which had more than $100 million dollar VC backing, was voted to most likely to succeed by a VC conference.

Sorry for posting about MRVC in SDLI thread. I would like to convince Pat to rejoin the MRVC board because I really like to read what she writes. I will probably post one more time about MRVC later. Here is my rationale:

In ancient China, a war lord (who at that time had a few thousand troops and a couple of his sworn-brothers who are great fighters) wanted to succeed. He was told that there was this smart person (Konming) he needs to get to get the kingdom. Unfortunately, Konming resided in deep mountain and has pledged for quite scholarly life. After his brothers both tried and failed to convince the person they had a good cause, he went to see Konming two times and each time he failed. After the now infamous third attempt, Konming was willing to come out and help. With his hel (one of the greatest, if not the greatest, stratigist in Chinese history), the Lord nearly won himself the kingdom.

Thank you all for being patient with me.
