China Unicom says to use 3G CDMA, test next year
HONG KONG, June 12 (Reuters) - China Unicom, China's number two telecoms provider, will use the third generation CDMA system of U.S. digital wireless company Qualcomm Inc (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) and start testing the system next year, Yang Xinazu, the chairman and chief executive officer, told a news conference on Monday.

China Unicom said this month it was scrapping plans to use current-generation CDMA technology, opting instead to stick with its European-standard GSM network. But Unicom said it would use Qualcomm's CDMA, or code division multiple access, for later-generation systems.

China Unicom, set for an initial public offering this month, confirmed on Monday it had raised the institutional portion of its IPO price range to HK$13.80 to HK$16.00 per share from HK$11.50 to HK$14.50. It is aiming to raise some US$5 billion.

Qualcomm's China woes have contributed to a precipitous drop in the firm's stock, which peaked in January at US$200 and closed on Friday at US$79-1/16.
