History is chaotic, and there is no way of knowing that if some even were different that things would be better or worse. Still AT&T as a monopoly was a much slower moving beast than one would expect of a technology company today. The only difference between my grandmother's service and the service I had in high school was that my grandmother's phone had a crank on the side while my sister had a lighted "princess" phone. We still had party lines and had to listen for the special ring. (FWIW - as kids we were terrible at cranking out the ring pattern on grandma's phone so everyone on the line would pick it up thinking it was an emergency call). Granted things started to change with "touch tone" dialing but it wasn't until the breakup that the nature of the phone began to change.
