. Bell Labs did make quite a few discoveries, though.. Granted, but just like Microsoft you have to wonder what they might have developed if there was a little pressure to compete. I saw my first transistor radio in the late 1960s, it was a Sony. TP

In most places, unless the state insisted, AT&T tried to avoid providing coverage in sparsely populated areas. There was a hierarchy of secondary coverage -- GTE, Continental, etc. At the sparsest level where no one could make a buck, rural telephone coops financed by the federal government provided the service. In the one that covered my farm in Illinois the members built the poles and strong the lines. Lot's of fun, but service was primitive. I lived in several cities where General Telephone provided the service. Really awful. Customers with that experience loved Bell telephone companies.
