Even the name of the bear was taboo

Aye, they called him...Darfott. Darfott's true name must not be spoken.

Tero,

<< the bear was taboo... kind of like the way some people avoid using "W-CDMA" nowadays and insist on some euphemism like "DS-CDMA" >>

Just trying to adapt to the correct nomenclature (whatever that is).

Seems to me that ETSI is using UTRA FDD (WCDMA) for IMT-DS, and UTRA TDD, and TD-SCDMA for IMT-TC.

For W-CDMA or WCDMA (neither of which appears in "glossary of terms" within ETSI UMTS documentation). Direct Spread (DS) or IMT-2000 CDMA Direct Spread are spelled out to describe UTRA W-CDMA.

I avoid "wideband CDMA" usage primarily because it gets a little confusing (and I get easily confused <g>). It certainly got confusing earlier this month over published reports out of China.

Nokia describes WCDMA-DS in their 3G acronym listing thus:

Wideband Code Division Multiple Access - A radio interface for UMTS, characterized by use of a wider band than CDMA. Has additional advantages of high transfer rate, and increased system capacity and communication quality by statistical multiplexing, etc. WCDMA efficiently utilizes the radio spectrum to provide a maximum data rate of 2 Mbit/s. Originally, WCDMA was written with a "3G" indication. However, since it is now being reviewed under 3G Harmonization together with two other systems, it is more precisely specified here as WCDMA-DS.

They also describe UTRA (and UTRAN) thus:

UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access - Often applied with identical meaning of WCDMA-DS.

So how about WCDMA-DS (I'll give you the W). The DS tag eliminates the confusion potential.

BTW: No fair calling on "pagan gods of the North".

This is beginning to sound like that Michael Creighton book.

Tero, are you the 13th Warrior???

<GGG>

BTW: I am also disturbed by the lack of loyalty shown by the network providers toward the infrastructure and handset makers. I guess they will be re-shopping the infra companies at every upgrade point. Even though the news has been in Nokia's favor so far I will have to keep a closer eye on Nokia than I thought.
