Repair Shops Blame for High Gasoline Prices Being Placed on Domestic Producersbiz.yahoo.com Monday June 12, 3:23 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: New York State Association of Service Stations and Repair Shops Blame for High Gasoline Prices Being Placed on Domestic Producers ALBANY, N.Y., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The cost of gasoline to service station dealers has increased a statewide average of six cents per gallon since June 1, according to surveys conducted by the New York State Association of Service Stations and Repair Shops (NYSASSRS). This is in addition to an eight cent per gallon price hike to dealers during May. So far this year, the price that station dealers pay for gasoline has risen twenty-two cents per gallon.According to a representative of New York's service stations and repair shops the blame for rising gas prices should squarely be placed on decreased crude production and not on local service stations. ``Owners and operators of service stations are not realizing increased profits from the rising cost of gasoline. They are merely passing along the increases producers have imposed on them,'' said Ralph Bombardiere, executive director of the New York State Association of Service Stations and Repair Shops. There has been a significant decrease in domestic oil production in recent months. When there is less product available, the price to service stations increases. In some instances, our members have actually absorbed a certain amount of the increases,`` Bombardiere said. Federal regulations requiring the use of reformulated gasoline during certain months of the year also has little to do with recent price increases. Reformulated gasoline is used during warmer months in certain populated areas as a means of reducing emissions. ``Reformulated gasoline requirements should add only pennies per gallon and is felt only in the metropolitan New York City area,'' Bombardiere said. ``Although OPEC has increased production over the last few months, the same can not be said for domestic producers,'' said Bombardiere. During May, output from the Alaska North Slope, site of the nation's largest oil field, was off 10% from a year ago and 16% from two years back. June production is expected to decline another 10% due to planned maintenance.Saudi Arabian oil minister Ali al-Naimi has cast doubt on whether OPEC should increase production if crude prices remained above the $28 per barrel level. In a recent interview he stated that current high oil prices were the result of artificial tightness in gasoline markets in the U.S. The New York State Association of Service Stations and Repair Shops (NYSASSRS) is statewide association representing over 3,500 independent automotive service stations and repair shops throughout New York State. Comprised of seven affiliated groups representing Albany, Buffalo, Elmira, Long Island, New York City, Rochester and Syracuse, NYSASSRS seeks to protect the interests of independent business and the motoring public.
