AT&T in the 1960's
When I think of that I am always reminded of the movie The President's Analyst. Right you are, AT&T was a great asset, and once the phone system was ubiquitous and standardized it was best served by it's breakup. Microsoft is at an equivalent stage now. The big difference is that Microsoft achieved this stage quick enough that the company founders are still in position and egos get involved. I'm sure Gates is aware of how Ross Perot lost focus when he lost control of his company and Bill fears he won't know what to do with himself in a post Microsoft world.
